Our Coffee Travels
From the volcanic slopes of Indonesia to the cloud forests of South America, there’s a whole world of coffee out there waiting to be discovered. And we’re renowned for finding the best the world has to offer – but how exactly?
It’s simple really: we go looking for it. Literally. Our coffee buyers regularly travel the world, because we believe there’s no substitute for personally visiting the coffee farms and cooperatives we buy from. Our globetrotting experts, Mike, Hannah and Rick, look at everything from the quality of the coffee to the living standards of the farming communities. This means we can be sure we’re trading fairly and responsibly, and that our coffees are consistently top quality.
Hannah In Brazil
Hannah reports back on her recent trip to the coffee-growing areas of Brazil.
Brazil is the world’s largest coffee producer so anything that can affect the year’s harvest is watched very closely – particularly the weather. Just as in your own garden, but on a far bigger scale, changes in weather can have a massive effect on how well things grow.
The Journey From Bush To Cup
If you're a regular reader of this section, you'll know about the lengths we go to in search of suppliers who share our commitment to quality. But there's a lot more to producing top quality coffee than simply finding the right farms. How the coffee is handled and processed as it makes its journey from 'bush to cup' all makes a difference.
What The Label Can’t Tell You
Our Head of Coffee Mike has always said it drives him mad that we can't say more on our packs about the story behind each coffee – the country it comes from, the farmer who grows it, and our joint efforts to ensure it reaches you in top condition. So his latest trip to El Salvador gave him something to smile about.
“Not only was I returning to one of my favourite farms – the award-winning Bosque Lya – but I was bringing with me two special guests: writer Jo Haywood and photographer Andy Bulmer from Yorkshire Life magazine.
Nuts About Brazil
As the world's largest coffee producer and exporter, Brazil has an enormous impact on the coffee world – us included. High quality Brazilian arabica beans are an important part of many of our most popular blends, and the smooth flavour they give our Decaffé blend is one of the main reasons it's the best selling decaf roast and ground coffee on the market.
So, for us, visiting our suppliers in Brazil regularly has always been crucial. But as our coffees become more popular, it becomes even more important that we're working closely with existing suppliers so that we know what's happening on the ground.
